Australia's First High-Protein Dairy-Free Cheese Hits Shelves
BioCheese launches a high-protein, dairy-free Cheddar Shred product to meet consumer demand for functional health benefits

BioCheese, a vegan cheese brand, has introduced a high-protein, dairy-free Cheddar Shred product in Australia. The new product contains 10g of pea protein per 100g and is available in Coles supermarkets and independent grocery stores nationwide.
## Introduction to High-Protein Dairy-Free Cheese The company behind BioCheese, Bio Dairy Free, aims to provide a product that meets consumer demand for foods with functional health benefits. According to Vicky Pappas, CEO of My Co, the investment firm that owns Bio Dairy Free, the goal is to prove that plant-based and dairy-free products can offer the same nutritional value as traditional dairy products.
The new Cheddar Shred with Protein product is made with a base recipe of coconut oil, modified starch, and chicory root fibre, with the addition of pea protein. This combination provides a rich, savoury Cheddar flavour and a smooth melt, making it suitable for various dishes such as salads, toasties, and tacos.
## Pricing and Availability The product is retailing for A$9 per 200g pack, which is higher than conventional Cheddar cheese. However, Pappas notes that the pricing is in line with the balance of their convenience range, and they are working to bring their pricing to parity with dairy products.
## Market Trends and Consumer Demand The launch of the high-protein dairy-free cheese comes amid a growing demand for protein-rich products in Australia. Research shows that protein is the most important piece of on-pack nutritional information for Australian consumers, with many seeking products that support muscle recovery, strength, and weight management.
According to Innova Market Insights, high-protein and high-fibre claims are becoming increasingly popular in Australia, particularly in plant-based foods. Pappas notes that this launch is part of a broader effort to improve the nutritional value of dairy-free products, rather than just focusing on a single high-protein claim.
The introduction of BioCheese's high-protein dairy-free cheese is a significant step in meeting consumer demand for functional health benefits in plant-based products. As the market continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how other companies respond to the growing demand for protein-rich and nutritionally valuable products.
