Mars has launched Hungr.AI, a digital-only Snickers bar activation where users can offer virtual treats to misbehaving AI...

Mars, Inc. Has launched what it calls the world's first digital chocolate bar. The activation, named Hungr.AI, features an AI-generated Snickers bar designed for virtual consumption by digital assistants.

The campaign is a brand activation, not a physical product. Consumers are encouraged to visit the Snickers website when they believe their AI assistant is "acting out of sorts." There, they can grab a digital Snickers bar and offer a byte to their assistant. This plays on the brand's famous "You're not you when you're hungry" slogan.

A shift to digital engagement

The move reflects a broader trend in confectionery marketing towards experiential and digital-first campaigns. Brands are increasingly using digital experiences to drive engagement and maintain cultural relevance. This form of innovation allows Mars to tap into the fast-growing trend of generative AI without the costs and risks associated with developing a new physical product.

Ashley Gill, brand and content vice president of Mars Snacking, stated the rationale. "Snickers has long been the remedy for out-of-character moments," Gill said. "As generative AI becomes part of everyday life, we're playfully reinventing the way Snickers connects with our fans in today's culture."

Marketing without new products

The Hungr.AI campaign represents a significant shift in strategy. It prioritizes digital brand engagement over traditional product innovation like new flavors or limited editions. The report suggests Mars has essentially turned AI assistants into a modern equivalent of Tamagotchis, virtual pets that required user interaction.

This approach allows the company to generate buzz and interact with consumers in a novel way. It does so without launching a single new SKU. Whether consumers will embrace the concept of feeding their AI assistants remains an open question.

The future of confectionery marketing

The launch signals new opportunities for the confectionery sector to use artificial intelligence in marketing. The campaign is built around the idea of satiating a "hungry" digital assistant that produces strange or inaccurate responses. It is a direct attempt to integrate the brand into the daily digital rituals of consumers.

Mars, as the world's biggest confectionery company, is using this activation to explore how legacy brands can stay relevant. The focus is on cultural connection rather than tangible product development. The campaign is live now on the Snickers website.
