GTE Foods is launching its Bebop dairy-free ice cream across Asia-Pacific, targeting consumers who want a lower-calorie, plant-based alternative. Co-founder David Pan said the brand addresses a tension where people love ice cream but associate it with guilt, bloating, and high calorie content. He explained the company wants to change the perception that enjoying ice cream leads to feeling guilty and bloated.

The company aims to make health compatible with the expected ice cream experience. Pan stated the brand is for people who like ice cream but are afraid to eat it because it's all about health and protein. Bebop is made entirely from plant fats using a blend of ingredients including cashew, coconut, almond, oats, soy, and rice to recreate the creaminess and texture of conventional ice cream.

Initial markets include Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, and Australia, with Singapore and Japan as the starting points chosen partly for proximity. Pan cited these regions for their interest in health and premium products. Japan is seen as particularly important due to consumer appreciation for quality and craftsmanship.

Market Positioning and Price

Bebop is positioned at a higher price point. A single 3.5-ounce (103ml) serving retails for TWD120, or approximately US$3.76. The company believes its modern manufacturing facility provides an advantage over many hand-made competitors, allowing for greater production control and scalability. China is noted as a potential future market due to a growing health focus. However, Pan emphasized that health and quality alone are insufficient; taste remains a critical priority for success.

Product Formulation and Calories

The product is marketed as a fully plant-based ice cream. According to Pan, it has half the calories of traditional mainstream options. He provided a specific comparison for the Cookies & Coconut Cream flavor, which tastes very much like Oreo's Cookies & Cream.

Flavor / MetricCalories per 3.5-oz (103ml) Serving
Bebop Cookies & Coconut Cream175
Other mainstream ice cream brands300 to 350

Pan described the taste profile as complex, noting it is not just sweet but has layers of flavours that come out over time. He said it is not so sweet that it just hits you with sugar, but it's sweet enough. The Banana Caramel Cookies variety contains banana, coconut oil, and oat cookies, while the Chocolate Trane Frozen Dessert contains cashew.

Retail and Foodservice Availability

Bebop is currently available in retailers across Taiwan, including supermarkets and specialty stores. The company also produces larger-format products for the foodservice channel, featuring flavors specifically formulated to pair with desserts. The brand's expansion is focused on making indulgence compatible with a health-conscious mindset, offering an option for consumers who are mindful of their stats but still want to enjoy a treat, much like a fan might check the standings but still enjoy the game.
