News: One Planet Pizza has launched three frozen vegan ready meals exclusively in 276 Asda stores

One Planet Pizza launched three frozen vegan ready meals exclusively in 276 Asda stores from 12 October. The company claims the launch taps a specific opportunity in frozen plant-based ready meals, a segment it says is underperforming within the wider ready meal category despite growing consumer interest.

The new range consists of Tofu Tikka Masala with Basmati Rice, Mac & Cheeze, and Veg & Lentil Ragù Lasagne. Each meal is sold in a 400g portion with a recommended price of £3.85.

Product details and nutritional profile of the new range

The meals are designed as high-protein, familiar comfort food options. Each dish has a distinct ingredient profile and protein content.

Veg & Lentil Ragù LasagneLasagne sheets layered with vegetable, lentil and pearl barley ragù, topped with a soya-based white sauce and cheese alternative15g

Production and founding story behind the meals

Production of the frozen meals is handled by a specialist small-batch manufacturer in Blackpool. One Planet Pizza was founded by father-and-son duo Mike and Joe Hill in 2016.

Joe Hill stated that securing the right production partner was a significant hurdle. "Finding the right manufacturing partner was one of the biggest challenges for these meals," he said. He explained the need for a factory that still makes items by hand in small batches, a capability they found in the UK.

The recipes have personal roots. Joe Hill revealed that his father Mike’s signature dish has been a lentil lasagne for more than 30 years, a meal Joe has fond childhood memories of eating. This recipe directly inspired the new Veg & Lentil Ragù Lasagne.

Strategic context and brand ambition in plant-based foods

The launch is framed as a strategic move to address a gap in the market. One Planet Pizza cites research by North Star to support its claim that frozen plant-based ready meals are underperforming. The business mission is to deliver on taste while being better for people, animals and the planet.

Joe Hill said the company always had ambitions to expand beyond its pizza roots. The goal was to create satisfying comfort food favourites with strong flavour and nutritional credentials like protein and fibre. The brand's growth was recognised in February when it joined NIQ’s Million Club after surpassing £1m in value sales.

Alongside this ready meal launch, One Planet Pizza confirmed a listing for two of its pizzas across Iceland’s Food Warehouse chain.
