GLP-1 Drugs Fuel Surge in US Protein Demand
Nearly half of US adults seek more protein, with demand driven significantly by consumers on GLP-1 weight loss drugs, according to a Circana report.

Protein demand in the United States is climbing, driven significantly by consumers taking GLP-1 weight loss medications. According to Circana's Eating Patterns in America report, 48% of adults now seek more protein in their diets, a seven-point increase from the previous year.
Among foods Americans want to increase, protein now ranks second only to vegetables. The report, based on $1.8 trillion in consumer spending and 618 billion consumption occasions, indicates this 'protein-maxxing' trend is becoming central to perceptions of healthy eating.
GLP-1 Users Intensify Protein Focus
Consumers on GLP-1 drugs are a major force behind the surge. Circana found 65% of shoppers using these medications are actively seeking more protein. The use of GLP-1s itself is rising rapidly; 8.5% of adults are now on a GLP-1 diet, up from 4.8% the year prior. 46% of adults report being on some form of diet.
Daphene Altema-Johnson, a registered dietitian at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, commented on the motivation. "The obsession with protein is actually driven by the perception that more protein equals better health," she said earlier this year.
Market Shifts and Corporate Response
The growing focus on protein coincides with declining sales for traditional processed snacks. Food companies are increasingly catering to specific dietary needs to attract new shoppers. Kraft Heinz, for example, has launched gluten-free and lactose-free versions of core brands while introducing options with more protein and fewer artificial ingredients.
Protein is a key way to reach diet-focused consumers. Innova Market Insights notes that 41% of consumers of all ages recognize a link between protein and their health goals. The nutrient is seen as supporting muscle mass for those on GLP-1s and is touted for benefits ranging from gut health to enhanced sports performance.
Future Opportunities in Weight Management
Innova expects the growing use of GLP-1s to further increase protein demand. The market researcher identifies a significant gap for product development. Currently, only 5% of global food and beverage launches that carry a protein claim also feature a weight management claim. This presents a clear opportunity for companies to create more specialized options targeting GLP-1 users seeking protein for weight management support.
