Tofoo & Co doubles tofu production with new Malton factory
Tofoo & Co has begun constructing a new factory at Malton Enterprise Park to double its tofu production capacity, supporting a target of £73 million in annual sales by 2033.

Tofoo & Co is building a new factory at Malton Enterprise Park in North Yorkshire. The facility will double the company's current tofu production capacity. Construction began in September and is expected to be complete by autumn 2027. The plant is designed to support sales of £73 million and the production of over 10,000 tonnes of tofu annually by 2033.
David Knibbs, CEO of The Tofoo Co., said the investment creates a foundation for the brand's next chapter. It ensures the company can meet growing demand from the UK and Europe. The new facility will provide twice the initial production capacity. It also offers 3.5 times the productive space of the existing operation.
Sustainable design features
The factory incorporates several environmental features from the outset. It will include on-site solar generation and heat recovery systems. Electric vehicle charging infrastructure will be installed. Space has been set aside for full effluent treatment processes to manage wastewater.
Stephen Smith, senior relationship director at HSBC UK, said it is encouraging to see sustainability considered so comprehensively. David Knibbs added that the facility supports the company's sustainability ambitions through these integrated systems.
Strategic expansion and market impact
This expansion solidifies Tofoo & Co's position as the UK's leading tofu brand. The company accounts for half of all tofu purchased in UK supermarkets. It is also the country's second-largest meat-free brand. The investment is a direct response to growing consumer demand for natural protein sources.
The increased capacity will support further growth in existing markets and new international ventures. Tofoo & Co has recently launched products in France and Germany. The new factory provides the infrastructure needed for growth in these and other European markets.
Financial and operational scale
The project represents a significant scaling of operations. The purpose-built facility is designed to enable specific financial and production targets.
| Metric | Target by 2033 |
|---|---|
| Annual Sales | £73 million |
| Annual Tofoo Production | Over 10,000 tonnes |
Sean Harrison, managing director of Harrisons Development Malton LLP, said they are delighted to deliver a facility that supports growth, operational efficiency, and future innovation. Dedicated space within the factory will include a development kitchen and pilot plant. This will support new product development and customer engagement trials. Additional space is allocated for future development.
The facility is scheduled for completion in autumn 2027. It will provide the doubled production capacity and sustainable features needed to drive Tofoo & Co's ambitious growth plans.
