Nestlé USA is expanding its Gerber brand into the pediatric rehydration market with a new electrolyte drink called Gerberlyte. The product is designed to treat mild-to-moderate dehydration in children aged one to three and is part of a broader effort to revitalize the century-old baby food brand.

According to Oscar Benitez, president of Nestlé Nutrition U.S., the idea came from parents who contacted Gerber seeking a trusted hydration option. Parents wanted a product free from artificial ingredients and colors. Benitez stated this launch is a clear example of the brand's ongoing transformation.

Product Details and Launch

Gerberlyte is touted as the first USDA Organic-certified pediatric oral rehydration solution made with coconut water. Each 12-fluid-ounce serving provides 25% of the daily value of zinc. It comes in three flavors: strawberry kiwi, berry blend, and tropical punch.

The drink is launching nationally this month, timed for the back-to-school period and the upcoming cold and flu season. It will be available in the baby aisle in two formats.

Multiserve bottle32 fluid ounces
Four-pack of bottles4 fluid ounces each

Benitez added that Gerberlyte hydrates faster than other normal beverages and will also be an option for extremely active children.

The Gerber Turnaround Context

Gerber's performance has been a challenge for Nestlé. Earlier this year, the company took a financial write-down on the brand. Nestlé CEO Philipp Navratil told analysts in February he was unhappy with Gerber, calling it a drag on market share.

Navratil has pushed for a turnaround instead of selling the business. He said the team is working to get innovation back on shelves and revive the brand, expressing belief in the essential kids' nutrition category.

The Gerberlyte launch follows a regional test at H.E.B. In Texas earlier this summer, where it achieved a 5% market share in the infant nutrition category after one month.

Broader Portfolio Transformation

Alongside the new drink, Nestlé is transforming more than half of Gerber's existing portfolio. This includes purees, cereals, toddler meals, and snacks. The reformulation effort focuses on reducing added sugars, removing artificial preservatives, and simplifying ingredients.

For example, the company swapped rice for sorghum in one of its Gerber snacks and is increasing organic offerings. New packaging highlighting ingredients and nutritional benefits will roll out through early 2027.

Benitez framed these changes as part of the brand's evolution to meet modern parent demands. Gerber, founded in 1927 in Fremont, Michigan, is the top pediatrician-recommended baby and toddler food brand in the U.S., according to a Nestlé-cited survey.
